A performance marketer with a background in math and physics, Mack Grenfell was always drawn to the quantitative side of his craft. He’d taught himself to write API calls and scripts, and developed an interest in the intersection of SEO and artificial intelligence. When large language models (LLMs) — AI systems trained on massive amounts of text, and able to generate creative copy as output — became publicly available, Mack began working on ways to incorporate them into his work. Before long, he saw how, with AI as his partner, he could deliver the massive volumes of text necessary for large scale SEO campaigns.
Starting with project work for friends’ companies, Mack built a consulting business using AI to generate SEO copy. Most of his customers were startups, or brands looking to bolster their online marketing efforts. His programmatic approach to the work proved a great fit for AI’s ability to automate text generation based on his directives. Working alone, Mack was able to deliver on engagements that typically spanned hundreds of thousands of pages of copy.

“I just don’t know how I'd build anything as complete on any other platform.”

Then one of his clients asked if instead of hiring Mack, they could buy his technology to use when they liked. “They basically asked if I could productize myself,” Mack explained. A Bubble user since 2018, he opened up the platform and started building a user interface to connect to the scripts and workflows he’d developed for his work. The result is byword.ai, an automated service for large-scale SEO projects. Byword lets clients generate thousands of articles a day in minutes of work. As the byword site says, “Sit back, relax, and we'll email you when your articles are done.”

An Easy Interface for Back End Magic

Mack describes himself as semi-technical. “I'm pretty happy writing Python scripts, but if you ask me to build a website from scratch, writing all of the HTML and CSS, I couldn't really do it,” he said. Bubble fills in those gaps, streamlining front end development without restricting what he can do with the AI engine. “I can layer Google Cloud and other platforms on top of the Bubble experience,” he explained.

Byword started with a simple landing page. The earliest version let users enter an email address and an article title. Byword would send them a sample article based on the title, and subscribe them to a product waitlist. “It looked very basic,” Mack recalled. “But the core technical problem, ‘Take title, get article’ was kind of solved from there.”

Mack also wrote his own integrations to connect Bubble to multiple LLMs and cloud functions. He’s continually expanding byword’s content generation prowess, like leveraging the Embeddings APIs to build richer articles. “It basically allows you to convert texts to large sequences of numbers, and then look for similarities between texts,” he explained. “There's a lot of cool stuff you can think of for integrating that into articles.” The core of byword’s functionality stems from Mack’s consulting experience, while LLMs give him the capacity to scale. Bubble helps him do it all easier and faster.

Bubble Hits the Sweet Spot Between No Code and Highly Technical

While no-code platforms are often associated with non-technical users, Bubble fills a need for technical specialists who want to focus on what sets them apart from the pack. “There’s a middle ground of people who are technical and want something to speed up the whole front end and database side of things, so they can just focus on the fun stuff,” he said. “There are probably a lot of people out there that haven't made that connection because they see Bubble as just a no-code platform.”

Initially, Mack had the goal of driving enough revenue through byword so it could replace consulting as his full-time job. Not six months in, he’s already there. He credits Bubble with helping him move so quickly. “I get a lot of feedback over email from users who are really impressed by how quickly I can fix bugs and deliver new features,” he said. “They’re often quite suspicious about whether it's actually just me, like a one man shop.” But it is just one man, honing his craft on technology’s cutting edge. “A big part of that,” Mack added, “is definitely Bubble.”

What’s the biggest advantage Bubble gives Mack and byword? Would it be too cliche to say, It just fits? “Bubble's a really nice match to my skills,” Mack said. “I just don’t know how I'd build anything as complete on any other platform.” At 4,000 users and growing, byword shows how much one person can do with the right tools — and there’s plenty more of this story still to be written.
