When Jiawen Tang met Camille Ang during their dual-degree MBA programs in 2019, little did they know that their thesis paper on the healthcare system in the Philippines would soon spark the creation of their own health insurance company.
But today, Jiawen and Camille’s company Hive Health is transforming healthcare for millions of Filipinos. From enrollment in health plans to scheduling telemedicine appointments, Hive Health works with more than 20,000 providers to help people access affordable, quality healthcare where and when they need it — and Bubble helps make it all possible.

From masters thesis to Y Combinator

Jiawen and Camille first joined forces in the Harvard Kennedy School’s International Development masters program. “It was during the pandemic,” Jiawen recalls. “We were looking for ways that we could contribute and make a positive impact.” Because of their respective family ties to China and the Philippines, the pair focused their academic efforts on emerging markets. Data from the Philippines quickly caught their attention.

In the Philippines, “over 50% of healthcare costs are paid out of pocket by the individual even though there’s a universal health care option from the government,” Jiawen explains. “Something felt like it didn’t click and we dove deeper.”



The pair brainstormed startup concepts to address the “critical challenges” in healthcare financing that they identified in their research. After honing their idea through countless pitches, they won grant funding from the Harvard Business School’s flagship startup competition and were accepted into Y Combinator. “It was no longer just a pitch deck,” Jiawen recalls. “We really needed to actually build something and see if we can bring it to market.”

Jiawen turned to Bubble.

Underwriting transformative social change on Bubble

Hive Health focuses on providing quality, affordable health plans to small-medium businesses in the Philippines. As an insurance provider, they serve as an underwriter and have direct relationships with providers. They’re also vertically integrated on the telemedicine side and have an operational team that processes claims from hospitals and doctors. The app that employees and employers use to access their services is built on Bubble.

When Jiawen and Camille first started building Hive Health, they only expected to use Bubble in early prototyping of their vision and as a way to quickly build out Hive Health’s MVP — but soon realized they could continue iterating and scaling without creating throwaway work or changing tech stacks. Julia Bayoneta, Hive Health’s Product team lead, adds, “When our team identifies a new user need, Bubble allows us to test and deploy a feature in as little as a week. Real-time deployments enable us to quickly adapt to our users’ evolving needs and behaviors.” When Hive Health acquired their partner health insurance company to secure their license and expand their provider network, they were able to easily integrate those systems with Bubble as well.

“There’s a lot we’re innovating on in the care delivery model,” Jiawen says. Hive Health’s built-on-Bubble app is one of their enabling differentiators in the market. 



“If they’re not feeling well, [users] can go to our web app. They can book a teleconsult and get a doctor’s note or a referral,” Jiawen explains. In the Philippines, there’s also an artifact called a Letter of Authorization that Hive Health has digitized, enabling patients to receive care or test results without waiting hours in line for a piece of paper.

Today, the team has grown from two co-founders to over 50 people, with a five-person Product team that handles end-to-end product lifecycle as Bubble Developers on staff and a contracted Bubble agency, Datamatic, that supports the team as needed. Hive Health also has a team of full-stack developers that extend the product even further. Three years into the business, their needs have scaled all the way from Bubble’s most basic functionality to Bubble’s powerful Enterprise plan.

Building for control, scale, and impact — with $6.5M in funding

Growing the product on Bubble has enabled Hive Health to iterate “very, very quickly,” says Jiawen. “I like the unique flexibility that Bubble provides, especially with the Enterprise instance.”

The Enterprise plan enables Hive Health to take advantage of dedicated server control and a static IP, which makes it easier to integrate their Bubble app with essential systems and configure custom Cloudflare policies, for example. Hive Health also directly connects their app to their backend database instance (rather than using an API) which enables building other core data platform use cases. In other words, they can easily pipe their data from Bubble to their data warehouse of choice, BigQuery.



And in July of 2024, it all paid off — Hive Health raised a $6.5 million funding round.

Looking ahead, the team anticipates expanding their API integrations with healthcare providers, as well as investing in AI and data science modeling to turn their data into actionable insights. “Having access to the database directly through the Enterprise plan allows us to do internal dashboarding in a much more efficient, scalable way,” Jiawen stresses. 

“I like the unique flexibility that Bubble provides, especially with the Enterprise instance.”

Hive Health’s roadmap is all about impact at scale. “This next phase we’re entering is really about how do we grow in a sustainable way with efficient operations and continue the speed of innovation on different features and products we’re launching,” Jiawen emphasizes. “That’s the piece Bubble will really help us with.”
