From beta release to billion-dollar leads

Texas-based startup NuShift is leveraging the power of AI — and the no-code prowess of Bubble — to reshape the manufacturing and maintenance industries by changing the way companies store, search, and use data. Founded by two industry veterans with years of business and technical experience behind them, NuShift built their Bubble app in just two months, launched a closed beta, and started fielding inquiries from multi-billion dollar manufacturing giants less than six months later. And they landed a spot in the Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub, too — all without spending a single penny on marketing.
The opportunity: Saving teams time — and money — spent searching for files

The NuShift journey began at a backyard barbeque in 2021, when NuShift’s co-founders — the company is currently in stealth mode, so we’ll call them Isaac and Louis — finally decided to make the leap into entrepreneurship. “I said, let’s stop talking about it, ‘cause we've been throwing ideas around forever. Isaac looked at me and was like, all right, let's do it,” Louis said. The pair saw a huge opportunity in manufacturing — on the maintenance side of the industry, specifically.

“We’d had some high-level conversations with aviation engineers about how every time an aircraft is downed, the company who owns it loses hundreds of thousands of dollars an hour,” Louis said. “A lot of times the maintenance guys will go out and try to fix something, and they don't have the documentation they need. So they'll reach out to the engineering team, and the engineering team doesn't have a centralized way to easily find that information.” People can spend days — not to mention millions of lost dollars — searching.

”Maintenance engineering teams are far behind — the ‘advanced’ ones are using Excel spreadsheets,” Isaac said. He and Louis decided to focus NuShift on developing AI-powered solutions to help maintenance teams better manage critical information, and they chose Bubble to help them bring the idea to life.

Their timing couldn’t have been better: By the time their Bubble app was ready for beta testing, NuShift found themselves in prime position to take advantage of all the hype around AI ushered in by OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022. “We started working on this idea four years ago, and now, when we open our beta, this AI craze is happening. I wish I could say we planned it,” Louis said.

The solution: Leveraging AI to un-silo critical information

NuShift’s debut product is called ELMR-T. The name is an acronym — Engineering Liaison for Maintenance and Reliability Technologies — and also a nod to Elmer T. Lee, the hall of fame whiskey distiller who started out as a maintenance engineer himself. ELMR-T aims to solve document storage problems, many of which are caused by data silos — stores of critical information that get “siloed away” on individual users’ computers or in shared directories that aren’t accessible company-wide.

ELMR-T makes data management smarter with three core features:

  • Document aggregation smart search gathers all of an organization’s critical files, processes them using AI algorithms, and makes them searchable via things like keywords, contents, image tags, or image captions. Search results link directly to source documents for easy information retrieval.
  • The knowledge base lets users ask questions using natural language. Answers are pulled from a customer company’s documents and presented alongside a confidence score (how certain the algorithm is of that answer) and additional context as appropriate.
  • A chatbot-style interface leverages OpenAI’s models. Like ChatGPT for a customer company’s knowledge base, the chatbot lets users ask questions and chat about anything in their documents.

All three features leverage natural language processing, a branch of AI that recognizes conversational language and can respond in kind. And it’s all accessible via a Bubble-built user interface connected to machine learning algorithms running on Microsoft Azure.

AI + Bubble: a perfect match

Isaac, who completed postgraduate work on artificial intelligence and machine learning in 2021, developed most of ELMR-T’s AI capabilities in-house. Then it was time to build a front-end interface for the app. “I had done a lot of competitive analysis in the past, so when it was time to build, I started looking at low-code platforms again and stumbled across Bubble,” Isaac said. He enrolled in a Bubble bootcamp to get a sense of what developing on the platform might be like. “I was impressed,” he remembers.

“We looked at a lot of different low-code platforms, and with Bubble, the business side of things made so much more sense because you could scale, and you could bootstrap.”

A deep-dive into what Bubble could do for a new business left him even more impressed. “Bubble is super friendly to startups,” Isaac continued. “We looked at a lot of different low-code platforms, and with Bubble, the business side of things made so much more sense because you could scale, and you could bootstrap.” When you’re funding your own startup, every penny counts. That’s where Bubble “was really clutch,” as Isaac put it. He had similarly good things to say about the Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub, adding, “Microsoft has been so good at being able to deliver what we need, and their program is so much more straightforward [than others’] in terms of the scaling model.”

In that way, NuShift was able to get ELMR-T’s beta version ready for user testing with very little time and investment — they estimate it cost them about 5–10% of what traditional code development would have, and say it took four weeks instead of 4–6 months.

Other industries want better data management, too

Data silos and document management aren’t just manufacturing industry problems, which is good news where NuShift’s future is concerned. “Manufacturing and maintenance are just one part of the equation,” Isaac said. “We see our software being leveraged in every industry because data silos are a thing everywhere.” And as they scale to meet that demand, they’re doing it on Bubble.

Between beta testing and word-of-mouth advertising, they’re generating some big-time new customer leads. One potential customer — a major player in the consumer goods industry — is especially eager to try ELMR-T’s analytics capabilities, a feature that’s on the roadmap but still in development. That’s music to Isaac and Louis’s ears, as it further validates NuShift’s plans. “The analytics part will really integrate with almost anything,” Louis said. “We could pull in data from web apps. We could do logistics, production, financial, and maintenance.” The goal is to be the centralized platform that gathers a company’s data and makes it accessible and actionable, which will be easy to do on Bubble. “[Users are] going to use the AI assistant to ask, ‘Hey, how many work orders did this particular technician create?’ or ‘What was our total cost of ownership for this week, for this asset?’” Louis said. Whatever the question, ELMR-T will find the answer — fast.

NuShift has a sales leader lined up to manage the opportunities knocking at the company’s door, and conversations are happening with a private investor Louis met on a recent plane ride. For now, Isaac and Louis are holding off on VC investment, instead focusing on moving from pilot testing to filling their sales pipeline. Their low development costs and rapid time-to-market, thanks to Bubble, makes it all possible. “We know what we have and what is needed in the market. We don't feel like we need to give up a lot of equity to secure funding because we have a strong go-to-market strategy,” Louis said. “Within the next year, we feel strongly like we’ll be close to a multimillion dollar company.”
